about
This City is a song I wrote with Warren Huart about breaking free from hustle culture in Los Angeles and realizing what it means to be a human being alive breathing in the present moment.
The cities we build around the world are not just places to live, but rather a reflection of what's going on inside our minds. In a collective sense, this metaphorical "city" is really every individual's ego. All the memories of the past are stored in our houses, and the freeways we drive on a daily basis connect these places. The goal is to not get trapped in all this. Life is short.
We have two choices in the end: we can spend most of our time working 9-5 jobs or, try to find a sense of connection within ourselves and with other people! It means knowing that the city of memories created within ourselves is not who we are as people. We can just exist in the present.
lyrics
Looking out my window
Traffic jams, pavements, the rush of people
Counting the hours left in the day
I'll take the highway to find an escape
Away, away, from all of the chatter
A place a place, to let my mind wander
I close my eyes and breathe
The skyline is all I see
This crazy world won't take hold of me
I will break free
from this city
Rusty guitar strings and dirt in my nails
Plastic signs, neon lights, pleasing the crowds
Dollars and coins it's an eight hour day
This lottery life it ain't working for me
I'll drive away for a moment of peace
No buildings or towers of concrete
I close my eyes and breathe
And all of my walls start crumbling
Remembering this world is not what it seems
I am free
From this city
Laying under a nighttime starlight
A bed of green grass and the sound of a stream
I'll float away into her arms
Lucid dreams, awaked mind
Fast asleep, the machine dies, inside, inside the answer lies
lies inside
I open my eyes and see
the beauty in struggling
I'm not a slave to factory living
I am alive and breathing
I open my eyes and see
knowing I've always been complete
My thoughts won't take a hold of me
I am free
From this city

"It begins with a bell-like shimmer of guitar followed a light strum and the sweet sonic purity of an angel caught absently
singing a delicate melody to herself, unaware she has an audience. Katie Ferrara’s voice entrances with the fragile beauty of a blossoming rose and stirs the soul the way a gentle touch tingles flesh."-Allen Foster (Songwriter’s Monthly)...more
